Rare "prime" Glass Vintage Lens? Teens Or 20's, No. 1838, Good Condition

This is a very unusual early glass lens. It is domed with the word PRIME indented in the glass. It has the number 1838 also on the back of the lens. It is in good condition with no chips or damage. It measures about 2-7/16" across the back. Any help identifying this lens would be appreciated. See photos closely....
